Biography

Teresa is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LISW-CP) in clinical practice. She is also certified as an Advanced Social Work Case Manager (C-ASWCM). After receiving her Masters in Social Work in 1979, Teresa has worked with the elderly and disabled in both Georgia and SC.

Her clinical experience began in Tifton, Georgia working in mental health with children, adolescents, and adults through individual and group therapy. During her last year there she managed a senior citizens employment program, based on the premise that positive use of their skills promoted happiness and decreased depression.

Teresa worked for six years with The Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, also in Georgia. This facility was one of the first to provide a comprehensive program in physical rehabilitation, independent living, and job training for adults with physical challenges. She provided counseling, education, and resources to clients and families, helping them adjust to their disability for reentry to the home and community.

Before returning to SC in 1991, Teresa worked several years in both hospice and home health. Through different work experiences she increased her awareness of the client’s right to make decisions for their lives and assisted them in fulfilling their goals.

After returning to SC, Teresa worked in clinical social work for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control for 24 years, performing various roles including Family Support Services where she worked with senior citizens in their homes to provide resources, counseling, advocacy with agencies in the community, and assistance when relocating to assisted living and nursing facilities. Teresa has also worked with the Richland County Home Health and Sumter County Home Health Services.

Among Teresa’s other accomplishments is that she herself has lived successfully with a lifelong disability and has never allowed it to stop her from living a full life. She enjoys swimming, dancing, cooking, and volunteering with Shining Warrior to provide assistance through one of their many programs to help Veterans. She is also a senior consultant with Shining Warrior, an online advocacy program for the economically and physically challenged adult and child.
